Owning/Managing Organization: Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO)

Program Description: First responders and the public alike demand a more seamless, mobile communication network. The Department of Transportation is meeting this challenge by launching the Next Generation 9-1-1 program, an initiative to advance emergency communication services by allowing the public to place calls using multi-media services and share data in real time via Internet Protocol based networks. The Next Generation 9-1-1 initiative aspires to adopt FirstNet's broadband network, text-to-9-1-1 services, VoIP and SIP trunking and video relay services. Agencies are encouraged to align with these emerging technological developments by working with their state's emergency call centers to create a Next Generation 9-1-1 Integration Plan.

Objectives of Program: Take the first step in integrating state-of-the-art emergency communication technologies in your agency's performance plan to boost response efforts. To view examples of state plans, visit
