FirstNet gives responders access to commercial technology

Imagine if a police officer could send the location of a fleeing suspect to other officers while perusing the suspect on foot. Or if medical personnel caring for a patient inside an ambulance could video conference with doctors in the emergency room en route to the hospital?

Thanks to a new government network, these tasks are now within reach, according to a blog by TJ Kennedy, FirstNet’s acting executive director.

FirstNet begins federal consultation

The First Responder Network Authority, the board tasked with overseeing the development of a nationwide, wireless broadband public safety network, continued its consultation process by reaching out to federal agencies last week.

The FirstNet board, which is currently in its first phase of state consultations, formally initiated the federal consultations with a "kick off" meeting Jan. 21 in Washington, D.C.

Last week, FirstNet held the Federal Consultation Kickoff Summit at the Department of Commerce in Washington DC. 13 federal agencies, the District of Columbia State Point of Contact (SPOC) and Statewide Interoperability Coordinator (SWIC), and the PSAC Chair were in attendance.
