What Is TACN FirstNet?
TACN FirstNet is a multi-year program designed to provide a framework for Tennessee First Responders to work with the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) in the design efforts for the nation’s first Public Safety Broadband Network. The goal of this program is to facilitate collaboration between Tennessee’s public safety community and FirstNet in defining the operational requirements, governance, and sustainability model for Tennessee’s portion of the National Public Safety Broadband Network (NPSBN).
We are Tennessee’s strategy for connecting with the Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network—called FirstNet. We are working to provide an interoperable, state-wide public safety data network linking public safety agencies across the state.
Agencies benefiting from this program will likely include:
- Law Enforcement
- Fire Services
- Emergency Management
- Emergency Medical Services
- Health Services
- Public Works
But most of all, once this network is in place and is working efficiently, the residents of the Great State of Tennessee will benefit from it! Our mission is to provide a statewide strategic planning framework for an innovative, inclusive, scalable, sustainable, and well-managed infrastructure that promotes FirstNet requirements and public safety for the residents and visitors of the State of Tennessee.

FirstNet will fulfill a promise made to first responders after 9/11 that they would have the technology they need to stay safe and do their jobs. By legislative mandate, FirstNet will establish a nationwide, interoperable public safety broadband network dedicated for first responders. The network will carry high-speed data, location information, images, and eventually streaming video. FirstNet will ensure interoperability among first responders and will take advantage of existing telecommunication assets, vendor competition and economies of scale to drive down costs to offer a dedicated public safety service at an attractive rate. FirstNet will create a single nationwide platform for public safety communications.
First responders need a reliable, secure way to reach public safety agencies across the U.S. Commercial land-based carrier channels are often congested when a widespread disaster hits. This break in communication poses a threat to responders and the public.
A nationwide, low-latency broadband network designed for first responders, TACN FirstNet wants every first responder in Tennessee to adopt FirstNet technologies to ensure safety and efficiency in every response call. Complete exercises and training courses to prepare for the nationwide implementation of the FirstNet broadband network, earn awards and garner statewide recognition of your agency.
